WHAT IS IT?

EASTERN AMAZON
FUND

The Eastern Amazon Fund – EAF is a private operational and financial mechanism aimed at strengthening public policies and social initiatives with a focus on the environment and sustainable development of the state.

Created by the government of Pará in 2019, EAF aims to raise private funding to support efforts tied to the Amazônia Agora (Amazon Now) State Plan (PEAA, the acronym in Portuguese) and operates in synergy with the State Policy on Climate Change (PEMC – the acronym in Portuguese) in the fight against deforestation and the decarbonization of economic activities in Pará.

Recognized as an innovative environmental funding strategy, the fund is based on private collaborations focused on the state of Pará.

Objectives

Among its main objectives are the preservation of nature, the sustainable use of natural resources, and the expansion of forest areas, associated with sustainable production and consumption and the construction of a new development model for the state.

With almost 1.25 million square kilometers in extension and the title of second largest state in Brazil, Pará is a key region for the conservation of the Amazon. Its territory is the same size as Angola and four times the size of Italy, which reveals the dimension of the challenge and, at the same time, its power to become carbon neutral in the land use change and forest sector starting in 2036, given the different regions of Pará and the fact that it is home to 9% of the world's tropical forests.

An innovative mechanism in the Amazon, focused on investing in initiatives for environmental preservation, climate balance, and socioeconomic development.
